4 Reasons Why Fish is Good for You

Articles 20 Des 2018

Fish is one of the healthiest foods in the world because it is rich in essential nutrients, such as protein and vitamin D. Fish is also the best source of Omega-3 fatty acids, which are very important for your body and brain. Here are the benefits of eating fish.

1. Fish is high in essential nutrients

In general, all types of fish are good for you. Fish are rich in nutrients, including high-quality protein, iodine and various vitamins and minerals. However, fatty fish species are considered the most healthy. That’s because fatty fish (like salmon, trout, sardines, tuna and mackerel) are higher in fat-based nutrients. This includes fat-soluble vitamin D. Fatty fish is also much higher in omega-3 fatty acids. This fatty acid is very important for the body and brain to function optimally, and is strongly associated with a reduced risk of many diseases.

2. Reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke

Many studies have shown that people who eat fish regularly seem to have a lower risk of heart attack, stroke and death. Researchers believe that fatty fish species are more beneficial for heart health, because of their high amount of omega-3 fatty acids.

3. Protect your vision in old age

Diseases called macular degeneration are a major cause of visual impairment and blindness, and mostly affect older individuals. There is some evidence that fish and omega-3 fatty acids can provide protection against this disease. In one study, regular fish consumption was associated with a 42% lower risk of macular degeneration.

4. Prevent asthma in children

Asthma is a common disease characterized by chronic inflammation in the airways. Unfortunately, asthma rates have increased dramatically over the past few decades. Studies show that regular fish consumption is associated with a 24% lower risk of asthma in children, but no significant effects are found in adults.

Fish is very good for you, but make sure the fish you consume is free of mercury (especially sea food). Very high levels of mercury can damage the nerves in adults and disrupt the development of the brain and nervous system in the fetus or young child.
